Making Choices and Decisions in Life

Change is the only thing that is certain in our life. The changes that occur can be both beneficial and pleasant and sometimes they can be less than desired. Making decisions at the right time can make the difference between the good outcome and the bad outcomes!
The road we take for journeying through life will not be even at all. There will be times when the going will be smooth, there will be times when the drive will get too bumpy for comfort. Some of the stops in the journey of life – you may even consider them detours – will be when we undertake important obligations, such as we marry or take up a new religion. Sometimes, we will find success and prosperity; other times there could be depression. We might become happy, we might become sad; we might win, we might lose… the journey of life is multifaceted.
And then there are periods when we will be making some drastic changes with our lives. We might also come at the crossroads in life, where we will have to make quick and right decisions, and often our knowledge of the matter is quite limited. When all this happens, how do we make decisions? And what decisions should we take? Because, we have to take decisions; we cannot afford to stop at such situations forever.
The problem is, no one can assure you that a decision you are taking at a point in life is the right decision.
Oftentimes, there is no way to understand the correctness of your decision unless you actually implement it in your life. Nothing can be guaranteed here, and you have to realize that. You may feel you are being righteous and just all the time, but do not jump to the conclusion that this will always bring happiness to you. This is just like when you love someone. You cannot guarantee love back. You may become wealthy, but that is not a measure of being happy. On the other hand, you might get promoted on a recommendation. Now that is not exactly righteous, but it does give you some measure of happiness. That is what – there are too many decisions to make in life. And you will never know whether you have acted in the right way or not.
You never know that you have made a wrong decision until it is proved wrong.
That’s very simple to deduce actually. If you had known your decision is wrong, would you have made it in the right place. Obviously not! Only after you have failed does a decision become a wrong decision. That is why it is said, decisions are wrong only in retrospect. Your decisions are right if their outcomes are good to you; or the decisions are wrong. It is as black and white as that.
But you have to take the risk of making a decision, don’t you?
There is always an element of risk in every decision you take – you can never know in advance what is right and what is wrong. But you cannot just cross your hands and sit. You have to make decisions in life. At least, that’s better than keeping your life hanging in the lurch. Any small thing in the decision might lead to astray, but then such a small thing could also open up a whole new opportunity for you. It all lies in the way you think about it. Now whether you end up lost or reach an exciting destination cannot be guaranteed, but you have to make the proper choices at least. Make sure that you deliberate a lot before every decision you make. Do not be careless about them. The following are some points that will help you to make the right kind of decisions:-
Equip yourself with knowledge of the situation.
You have to always make confident decisions at the outset, irrespective of the fate they meet with later. And for making confident decisions, you have to be sure that you have armed yourself with the right kind of information. Ask all the possible questions to seek out information. Think about what the situation is, who will be affected by your decisions, why you have to make decisions in the first place, what the repercussions will be, etc. These will always help you make the most authentic decisions in life. In most cases, people are not able to decide because they are not fully aware of the situation.
Assess all the options you have.
Every situation has different options that you can use to address them. These options might be just a handful, or you might have a whole cartload of them. And if there are no visible options, make your own options for the situations. Set your mind to work and find out some alternatives that you can use. You might find some very practical solutions. Or you might just stumble upon a seemingly ridiculous idea, which actually turns out to be the best one in the end. If you are not able to take all these decisions yourself, enlist the help of a trusted person to help you.
Analyze the merits and demerits of the situation properly.
Every decision you will make will have some good and some bad points. Think of the repercussions. See what you can afford. This helps you enormously in proper decision making.
Be truthful to yourself.
When you are making a decision, one of the most important things is to keep faith in yourself. Nobody can assure you your decision is right, and if you are wrong, it will be only proved later. But at the outset, you need to be true to yourself and select the best option possible.
And when the decision is made, you must not flinch from bearing the repercussions it will bring. There might be good as well as bad consequences; you have to prepare yourself to accept them. The most important thing to remember is that you have chosen a solution to a problem; and not taken things lying down. You cannot say whether the decision is right or not, but you will certainly learn something from it.
